Hurricane History and Preparedness
We get asked all the time, are there Hurricanes on the beach and how to you deal with them? Well it is a part of life here on our little sandbar. Since arriving here in 1998 we have had our share of hurricanes, tropical storms and Nor'easters. Each one of them has their challenges and all should be handled with respect and understanding.

HURRICANES TROPICAL STORMS SINCE 1985
Nor'easters -(ocean low pressure systems) happen in the winter and spring and have a devastating affect on our beaches and also cause ocean over wash, sound side flooding and we occasionally have roads that wash out. These can do alot of damage and can have surprising affects on the unsuspecting visitor or local. Be mindful of where you are on the sound or the ocean, you may wake up to a car that is covered with sand or has been flooded. These storms are extraordinarily bad because they typically have high winds and rain and move into the area, these low pressure systems are typically not fast moving storms. The intense winds and rain pack quite a punch and they can last for days or more than a week and can absolutely destroy the beaches. Be mindful respect these storms.
Tropical Storms and Hurricanes- Time line is from June to December each year and the most active months on the Outer Banks are August, September and October. This place is quite interesting in the fact that we can expect at least one on average every 1.3 years.
